Paris Saint-Germain emerged champions after a dramatic victory over Arsenal on penalties following a thrilling encounter that ended level after extra time.
The final got off to a lively start as Kai Havertz gave Arsenal the lead in the sixth minute, sending the Gunners’ supporters into celebration.
PSG, however, fought their way back into the contest and were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute following a VAR review. Ousmane Dembélé stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to restore parity.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages of normal time, but neither could find the breakthrough. With the score still level after 96 minutes, the match proceeded to extra time.
The additional 30 minutes produced plenty of tension but no goals, forcing the final to be decided by a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, PSG held their nerve to secure victory after Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze, Nuno Mendes and Gabriel failed to convert their spot-kicks. The French side capitalised on the misses to claim the prestigious trophy.
The defeat brought an end to what had otherwise been a memorable period for Arsenal. The Gunners had only recently celebrated their first Premier League title in 22 years, raising hopes of a historic double.
