The United States government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria in the ongoing fight against insurgency and terrorism, pledging sustained collaboration aimed at weakening extremist groups operating across the country, particularly in the North-east region.
Speaking on America’s counterterrorism operations in Africa, U.S. War Secretary said Washington would continue to work closely with Nigeria and other regional partners to combat terrorism and restore stability in areas ravaged by insurgent violence.
According to Hegseth, the administration of President has maintained what he described as a firm policy against extremist groups threatening civilian populations, especially religious communities vulnerable to attacks.
He stated that the U.S. Department of Defense had been acting on directives from Trump focused on protecting Christians and confronting violent extremist organisations responsible for deadly attacks across Africa and the Middle East.
Hegseth disclosed that one of the outcomes of the policy was the successful operation that led to the killing of an Islamic State commander identified as Abubakar Mainok, also known as Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki. The insurgent leader was said to have coordinated terrorist activities in Nigeria’s North-east, an area that has suffered years of violence linked to insurgency.
According to him, the operation was carried out through the U.S. Africa Command in collaboration with regional security efforts aimed at dismantling terrorist cells and cutting off operational networks of extremist fighters.
The North-east region of Nigeria has remained a hotspot for attacks by insurgent groups affiliated with the Islamic State and Boko Haram factions. Thousands of civilians have been killed over the years, while millions have been displaced from their homes due to persistent violence, kidnappings and raids on communities.
Although insurgent groups often justify their attacks using religious narratives, reports from humanitarian organisations and security agencies have consistently shown that Muslims in affected communities have also suffered heavily from the violence, with mosques, markets and villages frequently targeted by terrorists.
Hegseth noted that beyond the elimination of Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, more than 100 other ISIS fighters operating in the North-east had also been killed in coordinated operations conducted by the U.S. Africa Command.
He attributed the operations to what he described as Trump’s “unwavering commitment” to confronting terrorism and protecting vulnerable populations from extremist violence.
Security analysts say international cooperation remains critical in Nigeria’s anti-insurgency efforts, especially in intelligence sharing, surveillance operations and military training. Over the years, the Nigerian military has received support from several countries, including the United States, in the form of equipment, tactical assistance and counterterrorism intelligence.
The fight against insurgency has remained one of Nigeria’s biggest security challenges, with attacks extending beyond the North-east into parts of the North-west and North-central regions where armed groups and criminal gangs continue to exploit weak security structures.
Despite repeated military offensives, concerns persist over the ability of insurgent groups to regroup and launch attacks on remote communities and military formations. Experts have therefore called for a broader strategy that combines military action with economic development, education and community engagement to address the root causes of extremism.
Observers believe the renewed assurances from the United States could strengthen ongoing security cooperation between both countries, particularly at a time when Nigeria continues to seek international support in tackling terrorism, banditry and transnational crimes threatening regional stability.
As security operations intensify, many Nigerians hope that stronger international collaboration, improved intelligence gathering and better-equipped security forces will help bring lasting peace to communities that have endured years of bloodshed and displacement caused by insurgent activities.
