The Peoples Democratic Party has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja affirming the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election despite previously taking the presidential oath of office twice.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP described the judgment as a victory for constitutional democracy, rule of law, and fair interpretation of the Nigerian Constitution.
The party stated that the ruling was consistent with democratic principles and legal standards, particularly regarding the non-retroactive application of laws.
According to the PDP, the suit challenging Jonathan’s eligibility lacked merit from the outset and amounted to an unnecessary legal exercise aimed at creating confusion around the former president’s constitutional rights.
“The judgment of the Federal High Court aligns with the law and democratic norms. Laws should not have retroactive application, and the court has rightly upheld that principle,” the statement said.
The PDP further argued that the court’s decision has now removed legal uncertainties surrounding Jonathan’s possible participation in the 2027 presidential race, adding that the ruling strengthens his constitutional right to seek elective office if he so chooses.
The legal debate surrounding Jonathan’s eligibility has remained a recurring issue in Nigeria’s political space for years, largely because of the constitutional amendment introduced after his tenure in office.
Jonathan first assumed office as president in 2010 following the death of then-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He subsequently won the 2011 presidential election and served until 2015.
