The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, in a statement issued through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful across the country and urged Nigerians to use the period to pray for peace, unity, and national development.
Eid-el-Kabir, also known as Eid al-Adha, is one of the most significant festivals in Islam and commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.
The celebration is traditionally marked by prayers, charitable acts, and the sharing of meat with family members, neighbours, and the less privileged.
The minister also called on citizens to celebrate peacefully and responsibly during the holiday period.
Government offices, banks, and many businesses are expected to close during the public holidays, while essential services are expected to remain operational.
Security agencies are also expected to maintain surveillance and public safety operations across the country during the festivities.
The declaration follows confirmations associated with the Islamic calendar ahead of the Eid celebrations.
