The “endorsement” story is a perfect example of how political narratives are being manufactured and recycled as we approach the 2027 election cycle.
​Multiple fact-checking organizations (including CDD, FactCheckAfrica, and Legit.ng) have confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan has NOT endorsed Peter Obi for 2027.
​The confusion stems from two main sources that were “repackaged” to look current. A viral clip showing Jonathan speaking highly of Obi’s character and leadership is actually from September 2022, during a courtesy visit Obi paid to Jonathan’s residence in Bayelsa before the 2023 elections.
Peter Obi did visit Jonathan’s Abuja residence on April 27, 2026, as part of a series of high-level consultations with former leaders (including IBB and Obasanjo). However, Obi himself addressed the press afterward, explicitly stating “We are not talking about an endorsement yet. When I become a candidate, I will come back for endorsement. We are here to consult with him.”
​The rumor gained traction because it fits a popular narrative. There is intense speculation about a “merger” or alliance between various opposition figures to challenge the APC in 2027.
Interestingly, while rumors of him endorsing Obi circulate, there are simultaneous reports of posters in Abuja urging Jonathan himself to run for President in 2027 under the PDP or even a new coalition.
Peter Obi is now associated with the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after leaving the ADC, and supporters are eager for any sign of “big-name” backing for the new platform.
​As of today, May 23, 2026, Goodluck Jonathan remains in his “elder statesman” role, offering advice to all visitors but keeping his formal endorsement card close to his chest.
