The Anambra State Government says free blood pressure checks are available at primary healthcare centres across the state to improve access to healthcare services, particularly for residents in rural communities.
Dr Afam Obidike, the state’s Commissioner for Health, made this known on Wednesday during a news conference to commemorate 2026 World Hypertension Day in Awka.
The World Hypertension Day is observed annually on May 17 to raise awareness about hypertension and promote its prevention, detection and control.
He said that about 90 per cent of blood pressure monitoring and related healthcare services in the state were currently being handled at the primary healthcare level.
According to him, the arrangement is aimed at bringing healthcare services closer to the people and strengthening the fight against hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.
The commissioner stressed the need for increased public awareness on regular blood pressure checks.
“Many people lived with hypertension unknowingly because of its silent nature.
“Hypertension is a ‘silent killer’ and I’m calling on residents to take their health seriously by constantly monitoring their blood pressure and knowing their health status,” he said.
Obidike recalled that the state government unveiled the “Solution Know Your Number” initiative in 2023 to encourage residents to know and maintain healthy blood pressure levels.
He said the initiative was introduced to tackle the growing burden of hypertension through awareness creation and early detection.
The commissioner warned that hypertension could affect anyone irrespective of age or social status, adding that the condition could only be managed and not completely cured.
According to him, healthy living, regular exercise and proper dieting remain essential for reducing the risk of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.
He encouraged residents to visit nearby health facilities for regular blood pressure checks and early medical attention when necessary.
Obidike also commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for supporting the “Solution Know Your Number” programme, describing it as a major step toward improving public health in the state.
He added that the Ministry of Health would soon introduce additional programmes aimed at addressing cardiovascular diseases and promoting healthy living among residents.
