The situation at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant has added a volatile new layer to an already tense regional landscape. Following the incident on May 17, 2026, the UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed via technical tracking that the drones originated from Iraqi territory.
​This confirmation is particularly significant given the broader conflict involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel that has been unfolding since February. Here is a breakdown of the current situation:
Three drones targeted the facility. While two were intercepted, one struck an electrical generator on the facility’s outer perimeter.
The strike caused a fire, but the UAE’s nuclear regulator and the IAEA confirmed there were no injuries and no radiological release.
In the 48 hours following the Barakah strike, the UAE intercepted six additional drones targeting various “civilian and vital areas.”
By tracing the drones to Iraq, the UAE is pointing toward Iranian-backed militias, which have historically used Iraqi soil to launch “deniable” attacks against Gulf neighbors.
Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting three drones from Iraqi airspace shortly after the Barakah attack, suggesting a coordinated effort to pressure regional allies of the West.
Emirati officials have been vocal, with some describing the event as a “dangerous escalation” and criticizing the “confused roles” of regional neighbors who act as mediators while their territory is used for aggression.
​The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed “grave concern,” emphasizing that while the plant remains safe and operational, any military activity near nuclear infrastructure is a violation of international norms.
The plant currently provides about 25% of the UAE’s electricity, making it a critical hub for national stability.
Despite the heightened rhetoric, as of May 21, the UAE has reaffirmed its right to respond under international law while maintaining its defense readiness.
