The security landscape in Oyo State has seen significant movement recently following the distressing abductions in the Oriire Local Government Area. Governor Seyi Makinde and federal police leadership are currently coordinating a multi-level response to stabilize the region.

Governor Makinde officially inaugurated the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU). This specialized unit is designed to act as a high-mobility strike force to complement existing security architectures like the Oyo State Security Network Agency (Amotekun).

To provide a swift, tactical response to kidnappings, armed robbery, and banditry. The state government has pledged continued support for the unit through advanced surveillance technology and operational vehicles to ensure they can track criminal elements into difficult terrains.

The urgency for the VCRU follows a major security breach in Oriire, where gunmen reportedly attacked a community school. Reports indicate that approximately 48 persons, including students, a principal, and a teacher, were kidnapped.

The Oyo State Police Command, led by Commissioner Abimbola Olugbenga, is currently analyzing viral videos released by the captors to identify the victims’ location and the perpetrators’ identities.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu (who was sworn in earlier this year following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun) visited the affected communities in Oyo State over the weekend.

During his assessment, IGP Disu ordered an immediate “intensified rescue operation” using aerial surveillance and ground forces.

The IGP met with local leaders and victims’ families, emphasizing a “knowledge-driven” policing approach that relies on community intelligence to root out sleeper cells.

Security agencies have urged residents of Oriire and surrounding areas to remain vigilant and provide any information via the emergency toll-free line 615.
