The Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Gbenga Daniel, has openly challenged Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to a live television debate over issues affecting the state, declaring that any refusal by the governor to participate would be interpreted as an admission of defeat.
Daniel, who governed Ogun State for two consecutive terms between May 29, 2003, and May 29, 2011, threw down the challenge on Thursday during an appearance on TVC’s Beyond The Headlines, where he spoke extensively on political developments in the state and his disagreements with the current administration.
During the interview, the former governor insisted that the people of Ogun State deserved an open and transparent conversation between both political figures, especially in light of issues he claimed to have raised concerning governance and leadership in the state.
“This is an open invitation. And between you and I, if you don’t do that, my assumption is that he ran away. It’s an open challenge,” Daniel declared during the live programme.
The senator further urged the television station to organise the encounter without delay, insisting that the debate would give residents of the state the opportunity to hear directly from both leaders on matters affecting governance and development.
“You will have done this programme disservice if you don’t pair us. And let’s do it quickly,” he said.
The anchor of the programme responded by confirming that the station would formally extend the invitation to Governor Abiodun, adding that arrangements would be made to reserve a seat for the governor should he accept the challenge.
According to the host, the programme was prepared to facilitate the face-to-face engagement and would welcome Daniel back for the proposed encounter.
The development has sparked fresh political conversations within Ogun State, with many observers interpreting the challenge as another sign of the growing tension between the former governor and the current administration.
