The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says a major fire outbreak at a foam manufacturing factory on Oyedele Street, Ikotun-Egbe, was successfully contained with no loss of life.
LASEMA disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
The Permanent Secretary of the agency, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the agency activated its Eagle Response Team following distress calls received through the 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines.
Oke-Osanyintolu said responders arrived at the scene to find the factory fully engulfed in flames.
He said the cause of the fire had yet to be determined, adding that investigation was ongoing.
According to him, the combined efforts of the LASEMA Response Team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force led to the successful extinguishing of the fire.
He said no casualty or injury was recorded.
“The entire factory was consumed by the fire, while parts of adjoining buildings, including a church within the same premises, were also affected.
“However, the swift intervention of emergency responders prevented the fire from spreading to the densely populated neighbourhood,” he said.
Oke-Osanyintolu said firefighters were carrying out damping-down operations to prevent a re-ignition.
He said equipment, raw materials and finished products worth millions of naira were destroyed.
The permanent secretary commended the professionalism and synergy among the emergency response agencies.
“This incident highlights both the risks associated with industrial operations and the strength of Lagos State’s emergency response architecture.
“The zero-casualty outcome reflects the state government’s sustained investment in emergency preparedness, training and equipment,” he said.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the Lagos State Safety Commission would conduct a safety audit of foam manufacturing facilities in the area to prevent future occurrences.
He urged factory operators to comply strictly with safety regulations, including proper storage of combustible materials and installation of functional fire suppression systems.
He also advised residents to report fire hazards and unsafe industrial practices through the state emergency numbers.
According to him, the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory will assess the structural integrity of affected adjoining buildings before they are reoccupied.
He added that a post-disaster assessment report would be released after the conclusion of investigations.
