The situation in Sokoto is critical, with the death toll currently standing at 34 as of this morning, May 9. The outbreak, which began in early April, has seen a sharp rise in cases over the last few weeks due to the extreme heat and dry seasonal winds.
At least 254 confirmed or suspected cases have been recorded. Tragically, children aged 1 to 15 are the most affected demographic. The outbreak has spread across nine Local Government Areas (LGAs). The highest concentrations are in Sabon Birni, Wamakko, Shagari and Tambuwal.
Health Commissioner Dr. Faruk Abubakar-Wurno noted that a major factor in the 34 deaths is delayed treatment. Many families initially attributed the symptoms to “spiritual attacks” or mysterious causes, keeping victims at home until it was too late. Meningitis can become fatal within just a few hours if not treated with antibiotics.
The state government, in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), has established emergency isolation and treatment centers in Dogondaji and Kurawa (Tambuwal and Sabon Birni LGAs).
All medical care, including drugs and feeding, is being provided free of charge at these government facilities.
Authorities are urging residents to avoid overcrowding and sleep in well-ventilated rooms or even outdoors where safe to combat the heat-driven spread.
Sokoto sits within the “African Meningitis Belt,” and this 2026 surge is being exacerbated by a particularly harsh dry season. The NCDC has deployed rapid response teams to help the state strengthen laboratory capacity for faster case confirmation.
