The endorsement was formalized on Friday, May 8, 2026, during a meeting in Abuja. It wasn’t just a random statement; it involved three heavy-hitting groups; The Obidient Movement (Obi’s core base), The Kwankwasiyya Movement (loyal to former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso), The Coalition of Atiku Support Groups Initiative (CASGI) (loyalists of former VP Atiku Abubakar).
Habibu Muhammed, the spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, emphasized that they are moving away from “trial and error” leadership, specifically citing Obi’s performance and Kwankwaso’s educational legacy as the blueprint for 2027.
Interestingly, the move by Atiku’s loyalists (CASGI) seems to be an internal push to convince Atiku himself to step aside and back Obi. Obinna Okorie, the national coordinator of CASGI, explicitly appealed to Atiku to support Obi’s bid for the sake of national unity.
The coalition is tagging this as a move for the “common man” to take back the fate of the country from the traditional political establishment.
This comes at a time when the opposition is in a state of flux. With INEC primary deadlines looming (expected by May 30, 2026), there is intense pressure on these figures to decide whether they will run under their current parties (like the Labour Party or NNPP) or merge into a new “mega party” like the rumored NDC (Nigeria Democratic Congress).
