The Nigerian Air Force has intensified its non-kinetic collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security as well as the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development in a renewed effort aimed at strengthening national food security, empowering personnel and supporting Nigeria’s agricultural transformation agenda. The initiative is expected to open new areas of cooperation in agro-technology, livestock production, training programmes for military personnel and their families, as well as broader integration of the Air Force into national agricultural policies and rural development strategies.
The development was disclosed during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, to the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar. Speaking during the visit, Air Marshal Aneke praised the Ministry of Livestock Development for what he described as remarkable progress since its establishment in 2024, noting that the ministry has quickly emerged as a critical institution in Nigeria’s quest for economic diversification and food sufficiency.
According to the Air Chief, the Nigerian Air Force is increasingly embracing non-kinetic strategies as part of its broader national security responsibilities, explaining that modern security challenges require institutions to contribute not only through military operations but also through socio-economic development initiatives that improve the lives of citizens. He said the partnership with the agriculture and livestock ministries reflects the Air Force’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s efforts to achieve sustainable food production while also improving the welfare of military personnel and their dependants.
Aneke explained that one of the major focus areas of the collaboration would be the deployment of agro-technology and modern farming techniques within Air Force communities across the country. He added that the NAF intends to leverage available land and institutional resources to support agricultural production, livestock farming and agribusiness development. The CAS further stated that officers, airmen, airwomen and their families would benefit from specialised livestock and agricultural training programmes designed to equip them with practical skills in poultry, fishery, cattle rearing, dairy production and other agricultural ventures.
According to him, such initiatives would not only create economic opportunities for personnel after retirement but would also contribute directly to national food availability and price stability. He stressed that the military cannot operate in isolation from the economic realities facing the country, especially rising food costs and concerns over food insecurity in many parts of Nigeria. “National security and food security are closely connected,” the Air Chief reportedly noted, adding that instability, unemployment and poverty are often aggravated when communities struggle to access affordable food.
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for prioritising agricultural reforms and creating institutional frameworks aimed at unlocking the country’s enormous agricultural potential. The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar, welcomed the partnership and assured the Air Force leadership of the ministry’s readiness to work closely with the military institution in advancing livestock development initiatives nationwide. Mukhtar reportedly described the collaboration as a strategic step capable of driving innovation, boosting local production and promoting sustainable agricultural practices across Nigeria.
He noted that the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development in 2024 was intended to reposition the livestock sector as a major contributor to economic growth, employment generation and food security. The minister further explained that engaging institutions like the Nigerian Air Force would help extend the reach of government programmes while encouraging broader national participation in agriculture and livestock production. Industry experts have increasingly advocated stronger involvement of security agencies in non-combat developmental activities, particularly in agriculture, disaster response and community support programmes.
