Nigeria and Somalia have taken fresh steps to reinforce their diplomatic relationship, reaffirming a shared commitment to deeper cooperation in security, economic development and migration management amid evolving regional and global challenges. The renewed partnership was underscored during a high-level meeting in Abuja between the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Ahmed, and the Somali Ambassador to Nigeria, Mohamed Osman Mohamed.
The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters on Tuesday, highlighted both nations’ determination to expand collaboration across key sectors critical to stability and growth. In a statement issued on Wednesday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government emphasised its readiness to deepen diplomatic engagement with Somalia, describing the talks as a significant step toward consolidating longstanding cordial ties.
Welcoming the Somali envoy, Ahmed reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and stabilise its institutions after years of conflict and political uncertainty. He stressed that such support would be guided by respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and national priorities. “Nigeria is committed to supporting Somalia’s ongoing efforts towards stabilisation, institutional strengthening and national development, with full respect for its sovereignty,” Ahmed said, according to the statement.
The meeting comes at a time when both countries are seeking to navigate complex security challenges within their respective regions. Nigeria continues to confront insurgency and banditry, while Somalia is engaged in a prolonged battle against extremist groups and is working to strengthen governance structures. Officials noted that enhanced security cooperation between the two nations could facilitate the exchange of intelligence, capacity building, and joint strategies to combat terrorism and transnational crime.
