A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Joe Igbokwe, has stirred widespread reactions on social media following a controversial post in which he made sweeping claims about Nigeria’s major ethnic groups.
In a Facebook post shared on Tuesday, Igbokwe drew comparisons among the country’s three dominant ethnic blocs, but his remarks quickly ignited debate over their tone and broad generalisations.
The Anambra-born politician wrote, “We have three major ethnic groups in Nigeria: Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa/Fulani. Igbo and Hausa/Fulani have become the problem of Nigeria.”
He further added, “They do not have the cultural competence and emotional intelligence the Yoruba nation has. May God help.”
The statement has since generated mixed reactions online, with many users criticising the APC chieftain for promoting ethnic bias and deepening divisions, while others argued that it reflects a personal opinion that should not be generalised to entire ethnic groups.
As of the time of filing this report, Igbokwe has not issued any clarification or follow-up statement, as the post continues to circulate widely across social media platforms.
