The security situation at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) is currently a major talking point in Abuja following reports of an increased threat level.
Earlier this week, an internal memo from the Nigeria Customs Service was leaked, revealing intelligence about planned attacks by Islamist militants.
The memo specifically listed the Abuja International Airport and the Kuje Custodial Centre (prison) in Abuja. Terrorists reportedly aim to release detained members and cause significant damage to critical aviation infrastructure.
Security analysts have noted a “concerning correlation” between this threat and recent large-scale attacks on aviation facilities in the Niger Republic (Niamey and Tahoua).
A heavy presence of military, police, and paramilitary forces (including Customs and Immigration) around the airport perimeter. Security at the Kuje prison has been fortified to prevent a repeat of the 2022 jailbreak.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris has described these measures as “routine precautions” and urged the public not to panic, emphasizing that the security forces are fully prepared to forestall any incident.
​Expect more rigorous screening at the main gate and terminal entrances. Report any abandoned packages or suspicious individuals to airport authorities immediately.
Aside from the security alert, the aviation sector is also dealing with fuel price spikes. The government is currently in emergency talks with the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) to prevent any potential flight suspensions.
