A civil society organisation, the Citizens Alliance for Transparent Leadership (CATL), has launched a sharp and uncompromising rebuttal against former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of distorting historical facts and attempting to diminish the legacy of former president Goodluck Jonathan.
The group’s reaction follows recent remarks attributed to Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who reportedly described Jonathan’s presidency as a “product of inexperience.” He further linked Jonathan’s defeat in the 2015 Nigerian presidential election to what he characterized as shortcomings arising from that alleged inexperience.
However, CATL, in a strongly worded statement jointly signed by its convener, Musa Ibrahim, and publicity secretary, Oghenekaro Samuel, dismissed the claim as “not just wrong, but mischievous,” insisting that it misrepresents both the historical context and the realities of Jonathan’s administration.
According to the group, such remarks risk misleading younger Nigerians who may not have firsthand knowledge of the political climate during Jonathan’s tenure. They argued that reducing the complexities of his presidency to a narrative of “inexperience” ignores key achievements, reforms, and the broader democratic environment of the time.
“President Jonathan’s tenure cannot be so casually dismissed,” the statement read. “To suggest that his administration was merely a product of inexperience is to deliberately ignore the institutional progress and democratic maturity that Nigeria experienced under his leadership.”
CATL further contended that Jonathan’s handling of the 2015 election remains one of the most defining moments in Nigeria’s democratic history. By conceding defeat and facilitating a peaceful transfer of power, the former president set a precedent that has been widely praised both locally and internationally.
The group also questioned the timing and intent of Atiku’s comments, suggesting that they may be politically motivated, especially as conversations around future elections and political alignments begin to take shape.
Political analysts note that tensions within the PDP and the broader opposition landscape have continued to simmer since the 2023 elections. Atiku’s remarks, they say, may reflect ongoing debates within political circles about leadership, legacy, and the direction of the party.

It stressed that constructive political discourse should focus on addressing current challenges rather than revisiting past administrations in a manner that could deepen divisions.
