The Lagos State Police Command recently detained several officers from the Anti-Cultism Squad following a viral video showing them harassing youths and confiscating their mobile phones.
The harassment occurred at the Ojuelegba Underbridge during a stop-and-search operation on Monday night, April 6, 2026.
Officers were seen interrogation young men and forcefully seizing their phones without justification, an act that has been explicitly banned by police authorities unless the devices are established exhibits in a criminal case.
The incident gained widespread attention after being shared by an X (formerly Twitter) user, @ejykmykel1, who described the situation as “Police impunity… back on full display”, which sparked online outrage.
Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani ordered the immediate arrest and detention of the identified officers pending a full investigation.
The officers have been brought before the Commissioner for questioning, and their statements have been obtained. They are expected to undergo an orderly room trial.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has also directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Satellite Town to produce officers involved in a similar separate incident in Abule-Ado at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on April 8 for further disciplinary proceedings.
The Lagos State Police Command has invited the complainants to provide formal statements as part of their commitment to a transparent investigation.
