A former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and a former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have condoled with a former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, on Friday.
The death of the matriarch has drawn sympathy from political allies, associates, and supporters across the country, many of whom described her as a devoted mother and a strong pillar behind the public service career of her son.
The condolences came at a particularly difficult moment for El-Rufai, who is currently in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over corruption and money laundering allegations.
In a message posted on his X handle on Saturday, Malami described the passing of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai as a profound and painful loss, noting that the death of a mother is an irreplaceable tragedy that leaves a deep void in the life of any individual regardless of status or circumstance.
“The death of a mother is an irreplaceable loss, and I pray that Almighty Allah grants her Aljannatul Firdaus and gives you the strength and fortitude to bear this sad loss,” Malami wrote. “In this moment of grief and in the face of your current challenges, please be assured of my prayers, solidarity and unwavering support. I stand with you in prayers during these difficult, trying times. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.”
Similarly, Kwankwaso also sent his condolences, describing the late Hajiya Umma El-Rufai as a woman of virtue who raised her children with discipline, faith, and a strong sense of responsibility. He urged El-Rufai and members of the family to take solace in the life she lived and the values she imparted to her children and community.
According to close associates of the family, the late matriarch was widely respected for her humility, kindness, and devotion to her family and faith. Friends and political associates of El-Rufai noted that she remained a strong moral support throughout his years in public service, from his time in the Federal Capital Territory administration to his tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
The condolence messages have continued to pour in from political figures, traditional leaders, and supporters across different parts of the country, reflecting the wide network of relationships El-Rufai built during his years in public office. Many described the loss as not only a personal tragedy for the former governor but also a moment of reflection for those who knew the family.
Observers say the show of solidarity from political figures across party lines highlights the human side of politics, where moments of grief often bring together allies and rivals alike. Despite the political and legal challenges currently facing El-Rufai, sympathisers say the loss of a mother remains a deeply personal pain that transcends political differences.
Family sources said burial arrangements were being made in accordance with Islamic rites, with prayers already held for the repose of her soul. Supporters and well-wishers have continued to send prayers and messages of comfort to the El-Rufai family, asking God to grant them the strength to bear the loss.
As condolences continue to come in, many have prayed for the peaceful repose of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, while expressing hope that her family will find comfort in the legacy she left behind and the lives she touched.
