The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Nasarawa State, Alexander Ombugu, has refuted claims that he has been suspended from the party by a self-styled caretaker committee operating in the state.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday in the state capital, Ombugu emphasized that he remains the legitimate and recognised chairman of the party in Nasarawa State. He stressed that the group claiming to constitute a caretaker committee is neither acknowledged by the party’s national leadership nor registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The rumours being circulated are baseless and appear to be orchestrated to deceive political aspirants seeking to contest under the Labour Party ahead of the forthcoming primaries,” Ombugu said.
He explained that the LP constitution contains no provisions for a caretaker committee, questioning how such a body could emerge without following proper party procedures and due process. “It is alarming that these individuals have been issuing invitations to ward and local government chairmen, as well as other party stakeholders, who were legitimately elected during our congresses, in a clear attempt to sow confusion within the party,” he added.
Ombugu further warned members, executives, and supporters of the Labour Party across all 13 local government areas of Nasarawa to remain cautious. He urged them to refrain from engaging in any political dealings or negotiations with the unrecognised caretaker committee, describing such interactions as potentially harmful to the integrity of the party.
The LP chairman’s statement comes amid growing tension in the state as political parties prepare for primaries and candidates line up for various elective positions. Analysts have noted that attempts by rogue groups to manipulate party structures are not uncommon in the run-up to elections, especially in states where internal party democracy is fiercely contested.
Ombugu’s clarification is seen as a move to protect the party’s cohesion in Nasarawa State and ensure that its processes remain transparent and in line with the party’s constitution and national guidelines.
