The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a significant military escalation that could see thousands of American troops deployed amid the intensifying conflict with Iran.
According to a Reuters report citing U.S. officials and sources familiar with internal deliberations, the proposed move is aimed at safeguarding global oil flows by securing safe passage for tankers navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz—a critical artery for international energy supplies.
The mission, if approved, would rely heavily on a combination of air and naval power, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the operation in one of the world’s most volatile regions. However, officials suggest that ground forces could also play a role, particularly in securing sensitive coastal areas.
Among the locations under consideration is Kharg Island, a vital facility responsible for approximately 90 per cent of Iran’s oil exports. Any attempt to establish a military presence in or around the island is expected to be fraught with danger, given Iran’s advanced missile systems and drone capabilities.
Since the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, U.S. strikes have reportedly targeted Iranian naval assets, including warships and submarines, in a bid to weaken Tehran’s ability to disrupt maritime activities in the region.
Despite these efforts, military planners remain cautious. One U.S. official reportedly described the potential troop deployment as “very risky,” pointing to the vulnerability of forces operating in close proximity to Iranian territory.

The human cost of the conflict is already mounting. At least 13 American troops have been confirmed dead, while around 200 others have sustained injuries since the fighting began.
