President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday celebrated former Plateau State governor and elder statesman, Jonah David Jang, as he marked his 80th birthday, praising his decades of dedication to public service and contributions to peace and governance in Nigeria.
In a congratulatory message released through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Jang as a committed leader whose career has significantly shaped political stability and development in Plateau State.
Tinubu said reaching the milestone of 80 years reflects a life devoted to service and national development, noting that the former governor’s leadership and experience have left a lasting impact on both the state and the country.
According to the President, Jang’s role in promoting peaceful coexistence among the diverse ethnic and religious communities in Plateau State remains one of his most notable legacies. The state has historically experienced tensions along religious and ethnic lines, but Tinubu noted that Jang consistently championed dialogue and reconciliation as tools for lasting peace.
The President commended the elder statesman for supporting initiatives that encouraged interaction, understanding and cooperation among different groups within the state, describing such efforts as crucial for unity and stability.
Tinubu further acknowledged Jang’s long and distinguished career in public service, which began in the military before he ventured into democratic politics. During his time in the armed forces, Jang served with distinction and gained leadership experience that later shaped his political journey.
He also served as military governor in both Benue State and the former Gongola State during Nigeria’s military era, where he played roles in administering the regions and maintaining governance structures.
After Nigeria’s return to democratic rule, Jang transitioned into elective politics, eventually becoming governor of Plateau State, a position he held for two terms. His tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen governance, address security challenges and promote social harmony in the state.
The President said Jang’s experience across military and civilian administrations makes him one of the country’s respected elder statesmen whose insights remain valuable to national development.
Tinubu also used the occasion to pray for the former governor’s continued health and wellbeing, expressing hope that he would continue to offer guidance and wisdom to younger leaders and contribute to Nigeria’s progress.
“Your life of service and dedication to nation-building continues to inspire many Nigerians,” the President stated, adding that the country remains grateful for Jang’s contributions to leadership, peacebuilding and governance.
The congratulatory message forms part of tributes pouring in from political associates, community leaders and admirers across Nigeria who have celebrated the former governor’s eight decades of life and service.
