The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to intensify security operations in communities within Ekiti North I Federal Constituency following an increase in kidnappings, killings and other violent crimes in the area.
The call followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved during plenary by the House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi. The session was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.
Presenting the motion, Rotimi expressed concern over what he described as a growing wave of insecurity across several communities in Ekiti North I (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency.
He specifically highlighted communities within Ikole Local Government Area, including Oke-Ako, Ipao, Irele, Itapaji, Iyemero and Ijowa as areas experiencing repeated attacks.
According to the lawmaker, recent reports have revealed kidnapping incidents along the Oke-Ako, Ipao and Irele corridor, where criminal elements believed to be operating from nearby forests have targeted residents, farmers and travellers.
He said the activities of the suspected kidnappers had created widespread fear among residents and disrupted economic and social activities in the affected communities.
Rotimi stressed the need for urgent intervention by security agencies to protect lives and restore confidence among the local population. He therefore called on the Federal Government to deploy more security personnel and strengthen surveillance operations in the forests and rural routes believed to serve as hideouts for the criminals.
Following deliberations, the House adopted the motion and resolved to urge the relevant security authorities to take immediate steps to address the deteriorating security situation in the constituency.
