Leaders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for urgent reconciliation within the party following recent verdicts delivered by the Court of Appeal, warning that continued internal divisions could further weaken the opposition platform.
The appeal by party figures came on Monday as prominent members urged rival factions to set aside their differences and work toward rebuilding the party’s unity and strength.
Former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, described the judgment as a vindication of the rule of law, noting that the outcome demonstrated that “truth has prevailed.”
Fayose, who was earlier expelled during the controversial PDP convention held in Ibadan, said the ruling reaffirmed the importance of due process within political organisations.
The expulsion, however, had earlier been nullified by the Federal High Court of Nigeria sitting in Ibadan, which quashed decisions taken during the disputed convention.
Following the appellate court’s verdict, Fayose said the party must now prioritise reconciliation among its key factions in order to prevent further fragmentation.
He specifically called for dialogue and understanding between the camp associated with Nyesom Wike and Samuel Anyanwu, and the group aligned with Adamu Mu’azu Turaki and Seyi Makinde.
According to him, the prolonged internal crisis within the PDP has already caused significant damage to the party’s cohesion and public perception.
Fayose lamented that the poor handling of the dispute had led to the defection of several prominent party members, weakening the PDP’s influence across various parts of the country.
He stressed that the party must urgently rebuild trust among its members and present a united front if it hopes to regain its position as a formidable opposition force.
Other stakeholders within the PDP also echoed similar sentiments, urging party leaders to abandon personal rivalries and prioritise the collective survival of the organisation.
They warned that if the current divisions persist, the party risks further fragmentation at a time when strong opposition politics is considered vital for Nigeria’s democratic system.
Analysts say the coming weeks will be critical for the PDP as its leadership attempts to navigate the aftermath of the court rulings while addressing the grievances of aggrieved members.
Observers believe that meaningful reconciliation between the competing factions could determine whether the party emerges stronger from the crisis or continues to struggle with internal divisions ahead of future political contests.
