The Zamfara Government is to vaccinate 1.4 million children against polio in a new round of immunisation across 14 local government areas of the state
The State’s Incident Manager, Dr Murtala Salaudeen, made this known at a news briefing on Monday in Gusau.
Salaudeen said the government had deployed 1,997 teams to ensure no child is left unvaccinated.
He said the campaign includes a unique strategy of giving noodle packs to vaccinated children to encourage participation.
According to him, 16 polio cases were recorded in 2024, zero cases in 2025 so far. The vaccines were safe and effective in preventing poliomyelitis.
He said UNICEF was committed to continue supporting the state government on healthcare initiatives.
“The drive aims to consolidate progress in polio eradication, with stakeholders emphasising the importance of vaccination in protecting children’s health,” he said.
Also speaking, the UNICEF Specialist from Field Office Sokoto, Mr Isah Ibrahim, assured UNICEF commitment to supporting the state government.
Isa lauded the giant strides of the state government in ensuring the wellbeing of its citizens, particularly in the area of health care facilities.
