The Emir of Zazzau, Nuhu Bamali, alongside former Kaduna State Governor, Ramalan Yero, and the Kaduna State Commissioner for Information, Ahmad Maiyaki, have called on Nigerians to promote peace, unity, and religious tolerance as the country continues to navigate social and political challenges.
The leaders made the appeal during the annual Ramadan lecture organised by the Kaduna State Media Corporation in Kaduna State.
Speaking at the event, Bamali emphasised the importance of mutual respect and understanding among citizens of different religious and ethnic backgrounds, noting that tolerance remains essential for national development and stability.
The traditional ruler urged Nigerians to learn to accommodate one another regardless of their religious differences, stressing that peaceful coexistence is the foundation for progress.
“If we can tolerate and accommodate one another, we will achieve progress,” the emir said while addressing participants at the gathering.
Bamali also expressed concern over rising tensions that often accompany political activities as elections approach.
According to him, the political atmosphere in many parts of the country tends to become charged during election periods, which can create divisions among communities.
He therefore called on religious leaders and clerics to intensify their efforts in promoting messages of peace, unity, and understanding among their followers, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan when many Muslims reflect on spiritual values such as patience, forgiveness, and compassion.
“As election is fast approaching, everyone is not at rest. Clerics must preach peace to the people and promote unity, especially in this holy month,” he added.
Former Governor Yero also stressed the importance of maintaining harmony in society, noting that religious institutions and community leaders play a vital role in guiding citizens toward peaceful coexistence.
Similarly, Maiyaki highlighted the role of the media in fostering national unity and responsible communication, urging journalists and media organisations to ensure balanced reporting that promotes stability rather than division.
The Ramadan lecture, organised annually by KSMC, serves as a platform for scholars, government officials, and community leaders to discuss moral, social, and national issues in the light of Islamic teachings during the fasting period.
Participants at the event commended the organisers for sustaining the tradition, noting that such forums help encourage dialogue, strengthen community relationships, and promote peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of diverse backgrounds.
The call for peace and tolerance comes at a time when stakeholders across the country are increasingly emphasising the need for unity and responsible political engagement as Nigeria gradually approaches another election cycle.
