A former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, has been elected as the new Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, marking a significant political shift in the South-East state.
Chukwunweike’s emergence followed the conclusion of the party’s state congress held on Wednesday at Okpara Square, Enugu, where delegates and party stakeholders gathered to elect new members into key executive positions.
Announcing the results of the exercise, the Secretary of the State Congress Committee for Enugu State, Tobechukwu Okonkwo, called out the names of the successful candidates amid cheers from party faithful. He described the congress as peaceful, transparent and reflective of the collective will of members across the state.
According to the results declared at the venue, Dr. Chukwunweike was elected State Chairman, while Lady Peace Nnaji emerged as Deputy State Chairperson. Other party officials were also elected into various positions, completing the formation of a new state executive expected to steer the affairs of the party in the coming years.
Party leaders and stakeholders present at the congress commended members for their orderly conduct throughout the exercise, noting that the smooth process underscored the APC’s growing cohesion and strength in Enugu State.
Chukwunweike’s emergence is widely seen as a strategic development for the APC in the state, given his political experience and prior leadership role within the PDP. Observers say his cross-party political background could reshape the dynamics of party politics in Enugu as preparations gradually begin for future electoral contests.
In his brief remarks after the announcement, the new chairman expressed appreciation to delegates for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work with all stakeholders to reposition the party for greater unity and electoral success.
The state congress forms part of the APC’s nationwide internal restructuring aimed at consolidating its grassroots base and strengthening party structures ahead of upcoming political activities.
