The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday received the remains of the Senator representing Rivers South-East, Barinada Mpigi, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Wike, who arrived at the airport at about 5:30 a.m., led a solemn delegation of political leaders, family members and associates to receive the body of the late lawmaker.
The atmosphere was sombre as sympathisers gathered to pay their last respects. The late senator’s wife, Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and their children were present as the remains were formally received. Family members were seen consoling one another while dignitaries exchanged quiet words of sympathy.
Among those at the airport were the factional Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mao Ohuabunwa; Senators Philip Aduda, Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu. Also in attendance were the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda; Rivers State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Desmond Akawor; and the National Vice Chairman (South-South) of the All Progressives Congress, Victor Giadom, among other dignitaries.
The presence of political figures across party lines underscored the late senator’s influence and relationships within the nation’s political landscape. Further burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
