Former Vice President Kamala Harris issued a sharp condemnation of President Donald Trump’s recent military actions against Iran, alleging that the administration is forcing the United States into a  conflict that is neither wanted nor necessary.

In a statement released on Saturday, was shared on her X-Space handle, Harris directly challenged the rationale behind the escalating strikes, characterising the move as a “war of choice.”

“Donald Trump is dragging the United States into a war the American people do not want,” Harris stated. “Let me be clear: I am opposed to a regime-change war in Iran, and our troops are being put in harm’s way for the sake of Trump’s war of choice.”

The backlash comes amid a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Harris emphasised that military action should not be the primary tool of diplomacy, arguing that the current trajectory jeopardises regional stability.

“This is a dangerous and unnecessary gamble with American lives that also jeopardises stability in the region and our standing in the world,” she said.

This latest confrontation follows years of “maximum pressure” tactics employed by the Trump administration against Tehran, including withdrawing from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and imposing stringent economic sanctions.

In 2020, tensions reached a fever pitch following the U.S. drone strike that killed top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad, prompting retaliatory missile strikes from Iran on bases housing American troops.

The current administration has signalled a return to this hardline stance, prompting fears among Democratic lawmakers of a new, open-ended conflict
