Nigeria and Cameroon have signed a historic Bilateral Agreement on Technical Aeronautical Search and Rescue Operations, a move expected to significantly strengthen aviation safety and emergency response coordination across their shared airspace.
The agreement was signed on Friday, February 27, in Yaoundé by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Cameroon’s Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest NgalNgallé Bibehe, marking a major step in regional aviation cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
The pact enhances airspace safety by enabling faster, more coordinated responses to aviation emergencies across shared borders between Nigeria and Cameroon.
According to the Ministry, the agreement aligns squarely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises institutional strengthening, regional cooperation, economic revitalisation, and the protection of lives and property within the aviation sector.
The Nigerian delegation included the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) the Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and senior officials of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, underscoring the government’s commitment to effective implementation.
With the formalisation of these protocols, Nigeria reaffirmed its leadership role in promoting a safer, more integrated and resilient aviation ecosystem across West and Central Africa.
