The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) is actively engaged in its program for February, with the specific consultation scheduled for tomorrow, February 27 at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
​The informal consultation is designed to facilitate direct dialogue with member states currently suspended from the AU due to unconstitutional changes of government.
​The session includes representatives from Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, and Sudan.
The goal is to “take stock” of current transition roadmaps, assess progress toward restoring constitutional order, and address the security challenges (particularly in the Sahel) that often complicate these transitions.
This follows a specific ministerial-level session on Sudan held earlier this month (February 12) focused on the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis.
Notably, Guinea and Garbon are no longer on this list of suspended states. The AU lifted its suspension on January 22, 2026, following the successful presidential election held in December 2025 and recent meeting on Feb 14 at the AU Head Quarter respectively.
These consultations are held under Article 8(11) of the PSC Protocol. Because these countries are suspended, they cannot participate in formal AU decision-making. The “informal” format allows the Council to hear directly from the transitional authorities without granting them the full diplomatic status of an active member state.
