No fewer than 17 individuals have been convicted and fined by a Lagos Magistrate Court for engaging in open defecation and urination in public spaces.
The Lagos State Government disclosed this in a statement shared on its official verified X handle on Saturday.
According to the government, the offenders were apprehended by the Lagos Waste Management Authority during routine environmental enforcement operations across parts of the state.
The statement noted that the suspects were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where they faced charges bordering on environmental offences.
“Seventeen (17) environmental offenders apprehended by Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, for urinating and defecating in open spaces,” the statement read.
“The defendants were convicted and sentenced to a fine of ₦40,000 each or one (1) month imprisonment.”
The state government reiterated its commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws and urged residents to make use of public conveniences to maintain hygiene and public health standards across Lagos.
