The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday adopted an affirmation method to retain most of its incumbent party executives during the ward congress held across the state.
However, elections were conducted in a few wards where zoning arrangements and other peculiar considerations required a competitive process.
Across the wards visited, the exercise was largely peaceful, with scores of party members and stalwarts turning out in large numbers for the commencement of the congress. Party faithful gathered early at designated venues to participate in the process, which marks a key step in the party’s internal leadership restructuring.
The exercise was supervised by representatives from the party’s national headquarters in Abuja to ensure compliance with established guidelines and procedures.
Kwara APC Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, commended party members and leaders for their show of support, solidarity, and orderly conduct as the ward congress commenced.
He expressed satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere that characterised the exercise and urged members to remain united as the party prepares for subsequent stages of its congresses.
Political observers noted that the adoption of the affirmation method in most wards helped to streamline the process and minimise disputes, while elections in select areas reflected the party’s effort to accommodate zoning dynamics and local interests.
The ward congress is expected to pave the way for local government and state congresses in the coming weeks.
