The Christian Association of Nigeria has called for inclusive governance, effective policy implementation and strengthened national unity as Christians in Nigeria and across the world observe Ash Wednesday.
In a press statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, on Wednesday in Abuja, the association described the Lenten season as a solemn period of reflection, repentance and renewed commitment to faith and nation-building.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar, a 40-day period of fasting and prayer leading up to Easter.
CAN noted that the season presents an opportunity not only for spiritual introspection but also for reflection on the state of the nation and the roles citizens and leaders must play in shaping Nigeria’s future.
According to the statement, Nigeria is currently grappling with significant social and economic challenges, including rising living costs, unemployment concerns and persistent security issues affecting communities across the country.
“Nigeria is passing through a challenging period. Many households are struggling with the rising cost of living, uncertain job opportunities, and daily economic pressures,” the statement read.
The association urged political leaders at all levels to prioritise policies that promote economic relief, job creation and improved security, stressing that governance must be inclusive and responsive to the needs of all Nigerians regardless of region, ethnicity or faith.
CAN also called on citizens to use the Lenten period to pray for the nation, demonstrate compassion towards the vulnerable, and commit to fostering peace and unity in their communities.
Archbishop Okoh emphasised that national transformation requires collective effort, encouraging both leaders and the governed to act with integrity, justice and a renewed sense of responsibility for the common good.
