The House of Representatives is set to reconvene on Tuesday to deliberate on the 2027 general election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday.
Spokesman of the House and Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akintunde Rotimi, disclosed this in a statement issued over the weekend, noting that lawmakers would carefully examine matters arising from the schedule of activities unveiled by the electoral umpire.
According to Rotimi, the notice of plenary was formally conveyed to members through an internal memorandum from the Office of the Speaker. The memo, he said, drew attention to the constitutional and national significance of the newly released timetable and emphasised the need for timely legislative consideration.
He explained that the House would assess the implications of the timetable to ensure alignment with existing electoral laws and constitutional provisions, as well as determine whether any legislative adjustments may be required ahead of the 2027 polls.
The spokesman further noted that the leadership of the House recognises the critical role of the National Assembly in supporting a credible, transparent, and well-coordinated electoral process. He added that members are expected to engage in robust deliberations to safeguard democratic principles and strengthen institutional collaboration with INEC.
INEC had on Friday rolled out its schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, outlining key milestones leading up to the nationwide polls. The timetable is expected to guide political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders in preparing for the electoral process.
Observers say the House’s prompt reconvening underscores the importance attached to electoral reforms and legislative oversight, particularly as the country prepares for another electoral cycle widely seen as pivotal to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation.
