The Ondo State Government has described the recent killings of residents in Woro community, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, as painful and deeply disturbing, noting that the incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing the country.
The attackers reportedly struck Woro and the neighbouring Nuku community last week, killing scores of innocent residents and injuring many others in a wave of violence that has shocked the nation.
According to the Kwara State branch of the Red Cross, no fewer than 162 persons were killed in the attacks, while several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention in various hospitals across the state.
Reacting to the incident, the Ondo State Government, in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr Idowu Ajanaku, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives.
The state government extended its condolences to the Government and people of Kwara State, particularly the families of those affected by the attacks, describing the killings as a heartbreaking reminder of the need for renewed efforts to address insecurity across the country.
“The Ondo State Government is deeply saddened by the horrific killings in Woro and Nuku communities. This tragic incident is not only painful but also a grim reminder of the security challenges confronting our nation,” the statement read.
Ajanaku noted that Ondo State stands in solidarity with Kwara State at this difficult time, urging the relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
He also called for collective action by governments at all levels, security agencies, and communities to work together in tackling insecurity, stressing that the protection of lives and property must remain a top priority.
The Ondo State Government prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
