The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has debunked claims circulating on social media that Amoxicillin has been secretly banned in Nigeria, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, the agency said its attention was drawn to a viral video alleging that Amoxicillin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic, had been banned nationwide.
NAFDAC categorically dismissed the claim, stressing that no such ban exists.
The agency explained that while it regularly issues safety alerts, recalls, or regulatory actions on specific medicines found to be substandard, falsified, or affected by quality concerns, these actions are usually limited to particular brands or batches and do not amount to a nationwide prohibition.
“There is no blanket ban on Amoxicillin in Nigeria,” NAFDAC stated, urging the public to disregard the viral video and rely only on information from its official communication channels.
The agency also warned against the spread of unverified information, noting that misinformation about medicines could cause unnecessary panic and disrupt access to essential healthcare.
NAFDAC advised healthcare providers and the general public to always confirm drug-related claims through credible sources before sharing them.
