Electoral Act: Akpabio in panic, summons emergency plenary sitting of Senate for Tuesday

WHILE various of the amendment to the Electoral Act 2026, Senate President Obong Godswill Akpabio, has called for an emergency plenary sitting of the Senate on Tuesday to resolve the issues. The sitting has been scheduled for Tuesday, 10 February 2026 at 12 noon, according to a statement from Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, PhD. Senators were requested to be in attendance.
Last Wednesday’s passing of the Electoral Act did not produce the clarity that the public expected on “electronic transmission of results” from the polling booths to the collation centres. Opposition Senators had engaged the media insisting they passed a bill for electronic transition of results.
Akpabio had after the session that passed the bill said the bill provided for “electronic voting” which was left at the discretion of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The important detail was electronic transmission of results as law not left for INEC to determine.
