Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains a strong and relevant political force in Nigeria, warning members against treating the party like a charity organisation. Wike made the statement on Monday night while addressing the 105th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP held in Abuja.
His remarks came amid ongoing debates over the party’s future and internal cohesion. According to the FCT minister, the PDP’s survival and revival depend on discipline, structure and grassroots engagement, not sympathy or handouts. He cautioned party members against expecting the organisation to function on goodwill alone, stressing that political strength is built through deliberate organisation and hard work. Wike urged leaders and members to return to the grassroots and begin rebuilding the party from its foundation, starting at the ward and polling unit levels.
He said reconnecting with the people at the base was critical for restoring confidence in the PDP and repositioning it for future electoral contests. The former Rivers State governor maintained that despite its current challenges, the PDP still has the capacity to compete nationally if members commit to unity and genuine party building.
The NEC meeting brought together key stakeholders of the party, with discussions focused on internal reforms, reconciliation and strategies to strengthen the PDP ahead of upcoming political engagements.
