The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has cautioned the territory’s chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against proceeding with its planned peaceful protest scheduled for today, citing concerns over public safety. The NLC had announced the protest to press home its demands over unpaid allowances owed to workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). However, the police said the timing and potential impact of the demonstration could pose security challenges within the nation’s capital.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Josephine Adeh, explained that the advisory was issued in the overriding interest of maintaining law and order. She noted that while the police recognise the right of workers to peaceful assembly, security considerations must be carefully weighed to prevent disruption and ensure the safety of residents.
Adeh added that the command was engaging relevant stakeholders to explore alternative means of resolving the dispute without resorting to street protests that could impede movement and threaten public peace. The police urged labour leaders to embrace dialogue and constructive engagement with authorities, assuring that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property while supporting lawful and peaceful expressions of grievances.
