In a move aimed at unlocking the economic potential of Nigeria’s livestock industry, the Federal Government has inaugurated a new Technical Sub-Committee under the National Economic Council (NEC) to steer comprehensive development in the sector. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during the maiden meeting of the sub-committee at the ministry’s headquarters.
He explained that the initiative is designed to stimulate economic growth, enhance national food security and promote unity across the country. According to the minister, the technical team was constituted to bring together existing policies, research findings and proposals on livestock development and translate them into a coherent, actionable framework. This framework, he said, would be presented to the NEC for approval and immediate implementation.
Bagudu noted that the creation of the sub-committee followed the establishment of a high-level committee on livestock development by the NEC, which is chaired by the Governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris. The technical body is expected to support the high-level committee by providing expert input and practical strategies. He stressed that Nigeria’s livestock sector holds vast but largely untapped potential, adding that a coordinated and well-structured approach would help address longstanding challenges while creating jobs and strengthening rural economies.
The minister expressed optimism that the sub-committee’s work would lay the foundation for sustainable growth in the livestock industry and contribute meaningfully to national development goals.
