The Onitsha Main Market was on Tuesday barricaded by security agencies enforcing the one-week closure ordered by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, following the alleged defiance of the government’s Monday sit-at-home directive by traders.
Early in the day, hundreds of security personnel were deployed around the commercial hub, restricting movement in and out of the market area.
Several security vehicles, including Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and Hilux patrol vans, were positioned at strategic locations to block major access routes into the market.
The heavy security presence effectively grounded activities in what is regarded as one of the largest markets in West Africa, as traders and customers were prevented from gaining entry.
The state government had announced the one-week closure as a disciplinary measure after reports that some traders opened their shops on Monday, contrary to the sit-at-home order issued by the authorities.
Security operatives were seen patrolling the surrounding streets to ensure strict compliance with the directive and to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
As of the time of filing this report, commercial activities in the area remained suspended, while residents and traders expressed mixed reactions over the development.
The state government has maintained that the enforcement action is necessary to uphold authority and ensure compliance with lawful directives aimed at maintaining public order across the state.
