The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged motorists across the country to exercise heightened caution following the prevailing hazy weather conditions, which have reduced visibility on major highways and increased the risk of road traffic crashes.
The Corps said the dust haze, largely caused by seasonal atmospheric conditions, has significantly impaired drivers’ vision, making road travel more dangerous if adequate care is not taken.
In a statement signed on Monday by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the FRSC stressed that strict adherence to traffic regulations is crucial to ensuring safety during the period.
“The Corps notes that the current dust haze, occasioned largely by seasonal atmospheric conditions, poses significant risks to road users, particularly drivers whose vision may be impaired while driving,” the statement read.
Ogungbemide advised motorists to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances and ensure that vehicle headlights and tail lights are in good working condition to improve visibility.
He also cautioned against dangerous driving behaviours such as speeding, wrongful overtaking and distracted driving, noting that such actions could easily lead to fatal crashes under low-visibility conditions.
The FRSC further encouraged drivers to make use of fog lights where available and to avoid night travel when visibility is extremely poor.
Reaffirming the Corps’ commitment to road safety, Ogungbemide said FRSC patrol teams had been strategically deployed nationwide to monitor traffic and respond promptly to emergencies.
He appealed to road users to cooperate with traffic officials and prioritise safety to prevent avoidable accidents during the hazy weather period.
