Former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has declared his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general election, citing the need to uphold Nigeria’s power rotation principle.
Amosun made the declaration on Sunday at the Ake Pavilion in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during an event organised to mark his 68th birthday.
The former governor and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) argued that equity and fairness demand that the Presidency remain in the South until 2031, in line with the informal power-sharing arrangement between the North and South.
According to him, following the completion of eight years of northern leadership under the late President Muhammadu Buhari, it is only appropriate for the South to also complete its eight-year turn.
“There is a need for Nigerians to respect the power rotation principle in the Presidency,” Amosun said, adding that the South should be allowed another four years to complete its tenure.
He noted that President Tinubu’s second term would help consolidate ongoing reforms and strengthen national stability.
Amosun’s position aligns with similar views earlier expressed by former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and former Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, who have also called for power to remain in the South until 2031.
The former governor maintained that adherence to rotational leadership would promote national unity and reduce political tension ahead of future elections.
He urged political stakeholders to place the nation’s stability above personal interests, stressing that continuity in leadership would enable the government to deepen development efforts across the country.
