The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Tuesday, January 21, 2026, arraigned eleven suspects before the FCT High Court sitting in Jabi over their alleged involvement in the brutal murder of Barrister Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu, a respected Anchor, Reporter and Producer with ARISE News, and Mr. Barnabas Danlami, a security guard.
The tragic incident occurred during a violent robbery attack at Unique Apartments, Katampe Extension, Mabushi, Abuja, on September 29, 2025, sending shockwaves across the media community and the wider public.
According to the prosecution, the defendants face a nine-count charge bordering on criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder, offences that carry severe penalties under Nigerian law.
The suspects were formally arraigned and their pleas taken before the presiding judge. Following the arraignment, the court adjourned the case to February 2026 to allow for further proceedings, including the continuation of trial.
Security was visibly tight around the court premises as journalists, legal observers, and concerned members of the public monitored developments in a case widely regarded as a test of justice for victims of violent crime in the FCT.
In a statement following the arraignment, the FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all those responsible for the heinous crime are brought to justice. The Command also urged residents of the Federal Capital Territory to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious persons, movements, or packages through the Command’s emergency lines.
The killing of Barr. Maduagwu, a prominent media professional, and Mr. Danlami continues to resonate deeply, renewing calls for improved security and accountability. As the case moves forward, many Nigerians will be watching closely, hopeful that justice will not only be done but be seen to be done.
