A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, has condemned the renewed efforts to impeach Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, describing the move as a direct affront to democracy and constitutional governance.
Speaking on Friday evening while briefing journalists at his country home in Akokwa, Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, Ugochinyere said the impeachment plot undermines the rule of law and the sanctity of the people’s mandate. He warned that resorting to what he termed “political shortcuts” could further deepen political instability, not only in Rivers State but across the country.
The lawmaker, who represents Ideato Federal Constituency, argued that impeachment is a serious constitutional process that must not be trivialised or deployed as a tool for settling political scores. According to him, any attempt to remove an elected governor outside the strict provisions of the Constitution amounts to an assault on democratic principles.
Ugochinyere stressed that Nigerians must resist actions capable of eroding public confidence in democratic institutions, urging political actors to place national interest above personal or partisan ambitions. He added that disagreements within the political class should be resolved through dialogue and due process rather than through what he described as “orchestrated attempts” to subvert the will of the electorate.
Also present at the briefing was the National Chairman of the Action People’s Party (APP), Barr. Uche Nnadi, whose presence underscored the broader concern among opposition figures over the political developments in Rivers State.
The lawmaker called on relevant authorities and stakeholders to uphold the Constitution and ensure that democratic norms are protected, warning that silence in the face of constitutional breaches could set a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.
