Lagos — The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a serious road traffic crash that occurred in the early hours of the day along the Heritage Garden inward Oshodi–Oke corridor, leaving two passengers with severe injuries.
According to preliminary reports, the incident involved a long red commercial Tata bus with registration number MUS 507 XX, which allegedly crashed due to excessive speeding. The bus reportedly rammed into a moving truck that fled the scene without visible damage, complicating immediate identification and accountability.
LASTMA officials said operatives stationed within the corridor responded swiftly upon receiving a distress alert. On arrival, officers rescued two passengers who were trapped in the wreckage and immediately activated emergency response protocols.
The Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) was promptly contacted and arrived at the scene to administer first aid before conveying the injured victims to a medical facility for further treatment.
To prevent secondary incidents and restore traffic flow, LASTMA officers apprehended the commercial bus driver for investigation, while the damaged vehicle was quickly evacuated from the roadway.
Commenting on the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and wished them a speedy recovery. He described the crash as unfortunate but avoidable, stressing that speeding continues to pose grave dangers on Lagos roads.
Bakare-Oki used the opportunity to caution both commercial and private motorists against reckless driving, urging strict adherence to speed limits as indicated on approved road signages.
“Speeding remains one of the leading causes of road traffic crashes and needless loss of lives. Compliance with speed regulations is not optional; it is a civic and moral responsibility to all road users,” he said.
He further called on motorists to drive defensively, obey traffic laws and cooperate with traffic officers, noting that collective responsibility and discipline are critical to achieving sustainable road safety in Lagos State.
