A truck driver has tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident at Shangotedo inward Eleko, along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, following the overturning of a fully-laden 40-foot container truck (T-7740-LA), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.
Preliminary reports indicate that the articulated truck lost balance and capsized at the location. LASTMA’s 24-Hour Night Gang, monitoring traffic overnight, swiftly responded to the scene, secured the accident site, and prevented potential secondary collisions.
According to LASTMA, the driver, while attempting to deploy a “C” caution sign to warn oncoming motorists, was struck by a speeding vehicle. The driver of the offending vehicle fled the scene without rendering assistance, leaving the truck driver fatally injured.
LASTMA personnel evacuated the deceased and handed over his remains to the Elemoro Police Station, which has launched a formal investigation to apprehend the fleeing motorist.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who visited the scene, described the incident as a “heartbreaking but preventable tragedy” and extended condolences to the family of the deceased. He urged motorists to observe traffic laws, maintain regulated speeds, and exercise heightened caution, especially around accidents or emergency situations on the highways.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to road safety enforcement and called on all road users to respect human life and practice vigilance on Lagos roads.
The incident underscores the dangers of reckless driving and the critical importance of adhering to road safety regulations.
