The Egbu Girls Old Girls Association (EGOGA), Owerri has concluded its 3rd reunion and Winifred Hubbard Lecture with commitment by participants to advance education, mentorship and welfare of the girl-child.
This is made known in a statement on Wednesday by Ugonma Cokey, the Global Public Affairs Officer of EGOGA in Lagos.
It said that the four-day reunion, which had the theme, “Mentoring for Girl-Child Safety and Empowerment”, brought together alumni, educators, professionals and stakeholders committed to advancing the cause of the girl-child.
It recalled that the Winifred Hubbard Lecture, named after the school’s first principal, focused on mentoring girls for safety and empowerment, drawing insights from seasoned professionals and accomplished alumni across sectors.
Dr Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the Chair of the lecture, described the reunion as “revisiting our roots, honouring our beginnings, and reconnecting with the institution that shaped the women we have become.
“For me, Egbu Girls’ Secondary School is not just a name; it is memory, history and home, this reunion goes beyond nostalgia to purpose and collective responsibility.
“Mentoring girls addresses barriers to education, gender-based violence, cultural stereotypes, economic limitations and the widening digital divide confronting today’s girl child.
“Mentorship is the bridge that helps girls cross these obstacles, providing direction where there is confusion, strength where there is doubt and opportunity where doors appear closed”.
She also commended EGOGA for rebranding and infrastructural renewal efforts, noting that “when you train a girl, you train a nation, and her success returns to uplift the community.”
The statement said Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Iheagwam (Rtd) recalled the civil war’s impact on the school, applauding the association for initiating a 60-bed modern dormitory project to restore its lost glory.
Iheagwam, the statement noted, cautioned members against discouragement, saying, “There will be Sanbalats and Tobiases, but perseverance will turn critics into commendation when the project stands completed.”
It also said that the reunion featured the election of new global officers to steer the association for the next three years.
According to the statement, during the Annual General Meeting, Mrs Daisy Eke emerged as the Global President, with Mrs Ndidi Albert-Oguara elected Global Vice President I and Mrs Ijeoma Odoemenam as Global Vice President II.
Other elected officers, it added, included Mrs Ugonma Cokey as Global Secretary, Nkiru Egere as Assistant Secretary, Mrs Kachi Chris-Ebochuo as Financial Secretary and Lady Barrister Mrs Chiaka Mogaha as Global Treasurer.
The statement disclosed that Dr Christy Okolocha was elected as Public Relations Officer and Mrs Elsie Omotuyole as Welfare Officer, while the immediate past President, Mrs Ijeoma Enekwa, retained an Ex-Officio position.
The statement noted that the officers, sworn in by Justice Vicky Isiguzo, would officially assume office on Jan. 1, 2026, following the successful completion of transition activities at the end of the reunion.
A major highlight of the event was the launch of the EGOGA website to support fundraising for the over N300 million dormitory, as the reunion ended with a thanksgiving service at All Saints Cathedral, Egbu, Owerri in Imo State.
