The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the online accreditation of journalists and media organisations seeking to cover the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Election scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.
In a notice released on Monday, the commission announced that the accreditation exercise is open to all interested media organisations intending to deploy journalists for comprehensive coverage of the election across the six area councils of the FCT. According to INEC, the move is aimed at ensuring an orderly, transparent and well-coordinated media presence before, during and after the polls.
The commission emphasised that only accredited journalists and media organisations will be allowed access to polling units, collation centres and other designated election-related venues. “INEC has commenced online accreditation for journalists and media organisations intending to cover the FCT Area Council Election scheduled to hold on Saturday, 21st February, 2026,” the commission stated.
The electoral body urged media organisations to complete the accreditation process within the stipulated timeframe, noting that the online platform was designed to simplify the exercise and enhance efficiency.
It also advised applicants to provide accurate information to avoid delays or disqualification. INEC reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the media, describing the press as a critical partner in deepening democracy and promoting credible elections.
The commission added that timely and responsible reportage would help keep the public informed and boost confidence in the electoral process.
The 2026 FCT Area Council Election will determine the chairmen and councillors of the six area councils—Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji and Kwali.
